Leeks are a very delicate crop and must therefore be very carefully harvested. Due to increasing harvest volumes and high labour costs, one must not think of harvesting manually. In order to meet the high demands, special leek harvesters were developed. Leek harvester can basically be distinguished into two different lifting methods. The clamping band harvesters are used to harvest leeks, and they have a rubber clamp which grabs the leeks and pulls them out of the ground. This leek harvester eases a height-adjustable cutter into the soil. Torpedoes above the ground ensure that the leaves of the leeks go in the direction of the clamping band. In potato machines, a cutter and shaking device are eased into the soil, a filter chain then separates the ground and the leeks. Once the leeks are lifted and then dropped on to a collective band, the excess leaves are removed. The excess leaves remain on the field and must not be disposed of after the treatment of the crop. Lastly, the leeks are stored in boxes that are located in the rear part of leek harvester. Depending on the harvesting machine, this is done either by hand or automatically. Leek harvesters are available as tractors or built-on machines. Depending on the type, they can harvest simultaneously between one to three rows. For the fully automatic leek harvester, apart from the machine operator, there is no additional staff. The leeks are automatically stored in special boxes.
